SOURCE, TRANSFER AND FATE OF MICROPLASTICS IN THE NORTH-WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN SEA: A HOLISTIC APPROACH

Numerous, recent studies have shown the ubiquitous presence of micro-plastic (MPs) fragments at the sea water surface. However, a number of questions remain concerning the sources of these fragments and their fate once introduced into the marine environment. We propose a holistic sampling strategy designed to cover the entire cycle of MPs within the marine environment – from the source to the final sink - and aiming to provide some answers to the follong questions:

• What are the respective contributions of rivers and atmosphere to the MP input into the sea?
• What are the main controlling factors of MP input into the sea: river size and outflow, type of land coverage (urban, farming, industries), climatic events, etc?
• What is the fate and behaviour of MPs once introduced in the marine environment: drift towards the open ocean and/or the beach, settling to the sea floor ingestion by biota?
• Where are the final sinks and what is the proportion of MPs ultimately buried there?

Our experimental work focuses on a French coastal area: the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean Sea) and our sampling strategy includes the different marine compartments.
